“‘You used to call me on my shell phone, but ever since I left the sea, you, you, you- You and me we just don’t get along…’
I heard the husband listening to Drake’s “Hotline Bling” while I was working on one of my mermaid sculptures, and it wasn’t long before I found myself humming along, but switching a few key words…
Ever since I left the SEA you
Got a reputation for yourself now
Everybody knows and I feel left out
Girl you got me down, you got me stressed out
Cause ever since I left the SEA, you
Started wearing less and goin’ out more
Glasses of champagne out on the dance floor
Hangin’ with some girls I’ve never seen before
You used to call me on my SHELL phone
Late night when you need my love
Call me on my SHELL phone
Late night when you need my love
I know when that hotline bling
That can only mean one thing
…and then I couldn’t get it out of my head! I kept thinking about this mermaid who had left the sea… maybe she was in a big fish tank on display somewhere, complete with a treasure chest bubbler, and a “Scuba Drake,” posing for iPhone selfies and getting a reputation for herself… She could be trashing the ocean, drinking sodas and eating canned tuna… With her suicidal fish companion, her only lifeline is the sound of crashing waves from inside a shell… ”
